Forecast Discussion: Update For Today

Temperatures have shot up like a cannon, above what the computer models (and common sense) were forecasting. Winds are also incredibly strong this AM, with consistent gusts over 35 mph for most of us.

Frontal passage for Philadelphia should be between 8 and 10 AM, slightly earlier west and slightly later east with the front clearing the coast around noon. Rain and thunderstorms are on our doorstep this morning and they will be rocketing through the area over the next few hours. With a low level jet stream at around 80 kts, it would take much for a low-topped line of showers and thunderstorms to bring some of that wind down to the surface.

A wind advisory is out for the PA suburbs for this AM with high wind warnings in New Jersey and Philadelphia proper, and a flood watch is out for the area this AM. I would believe about 1-1.5" of rain is a good bet and winds gusting to 50+ and possibly higher with any thunderstorms is also not out of the question. Earlier this morning, Mount Holly had winds to 58 mph just 1000 feet above the surface. There is tremendous wind energy out there so downed trees and power outages are certainly possible.

After the early morning highs between 60-65 expect temperatures to drop by 10-20 degrees by dark, with temperatures into the upper 30's and low 40's for most everyone by sunset Wednesday. The wind should die down after dark as well.

Tracking the Event is up below and you can monitor the weather throughout the morning with radar, current conditions, and satellite. Also, feel free to post any obs below if you wish. They will be forwarded to the NWS for their storm data.
