Severe Weather Possible Friday
The Storm Prediction Center is monitoring our region with regard to Friday's cold frontal passage. A strong low pressure system will develop in the Plains in the next 24 hours and begin to track northeast through the Great Lakes. This low pressure system will set off rounds of Severe Weather over the Midwest, which is already under a Moderate Risk for Thursday. Our region could see some strong and/or severe thunderstorms on Friday. The WRF model is indicating some pretty decent CAPE and lifted index values for Friday afternoon and evening over the Mid-Atlantic and interior Northeast. Whether that takes the place of a narrow band of squall-like storms or if we get supercells remains to be seen. However, we are going to have sufficient warmth and moisture in place.
Right now, the WRF is suggesting north of Philadelphia through Central Pennsylvania as the prime threat while the GFS is focusing on the Laurel Highlands through Central PA as the main threat in our region. Timing of the cold frontal passage is going to be key for us as we are working with about 11 hours of daylight. The later on Friday evening the front passes through the region the lower our threat for severe weather will be as it appears much of the severe weather potential may ride along and just ahead of the front. As always, much can change between now and Friday on this so we'll keep an eye on it.
