January 10th, 2008 Forecast

Strong gusty winds have blown through our region this afternoon, with winds gusting to nearly 50 mph in Northeast Philadelphia earlier this afternoon. Check out the wind gusts in the region through 4 PM in this public statement from the NWS. Winds will die down eventually overnight and temperatures will drop through the 50's, 40's, bottoming out in the 30's in Philadelphia by morning. Winds should die down to under 10 mph by late this evening and temperatures should drop off a fair bit after midnight. Low temperatures, however, will still be significantly above normal in the region as normal low temperatures are in the low 20's.

Storm #2 of our family of storms is moving in tomorrow afternoon and overnight. Rain should move in around or after dinner tomorrow night and could be pretty moderate at times if not heavy. Temperatures before the clouds and rain move in could get slightly above 50 and then drop off just a bit overnight as rain and milder air moves in tomorrow night in advance of the cold frontal passage on Friday afternoon.

Regarding rainfall, Philly should get between one-half and one inch of rain and it should be through Philadelphia around midday, much like today.

Storm #3, for Sunday, continues to be in the model guidance and the GFS continues to suppress the storm while the EURO has trended northwest of Philadelphia, putting us in the warm sector. As of now, rain looks more likely for Sunday night and Monday than snow.

Today's Rains: The little bit of rain with this morning's cold front did little more than dirty up cars (or wash off the dirtiest of cars in Philadelphia), bringing only a trace of rain to Philadelphia and .08" of rain to Reading.

Torching in Warmth: January's first 8 days (through yesterday) have brought Philadelphia an average temperature that was 37.4 degrees, 4.6 degrees above normal. While this January has been mild, it has not been as warm as 2007 was. A year ago, the average temperatures in the first eight days of January was 49.6 degrees, 16.8 degrees above normal!
