January 12th and 13th, 2008 Forecast
After a rainy and at times foggy Friday with some gusty storms over South Jersey and Delaware we will see a relative sense of normalcy in Philadelphia's weather for Saturday and the first half of Sunday as high pressure builds in from the west. Skies will clear up somewhat during the afternoon with breezy conditions setting up late in the afternoon and for a time during the evening hours.Tonight should feature partly cloudy skies from west to east and temperatures generally in the 30-34 range in the outer suburbs to 37 in Philadelphia.
Saturday is shaping up to be a five star winter day with mostly sunny skies, light winds, and temperatures around 50 regionwide. Enjoy the "warmth" and sunshine on Saturday since it will not last. Temperatures -- they will be a changin starting on Sunday and we should see a colder pattern set up shop that will last us for a little while. While temperatures to start will not be significantly colder than normal it will be a bit of a reality check compared to 65 degrees that we saw earlier this week.
Sunday will feature increasing clouds and light rain developing in the evening thanks to our storm system that will likely not get its act together in time to bring us appreciable snow or rainfall. To the north and far west of Philadelphia, over the Poconos and through Central PA, the possibility exists for some light snow late Sunday night and early Monday with this storm system and the associated energy that gets transfered from a clipper moving through the Great Lakes.
Computer guidance from the GFS is suggesting little in the way of snow, maybe a coating or a half an inch of snow over Berks up through the Lehigh Valley, with over an inch possible over the Poconos. Yeah, it's a big snowfall, huh? Given the fact the computer guidance today has trended towards a split solution with the Canadian energy phasing later in the game it may be tough to get accumulating snow around these parts. Some light rain is expected for much of us in the area and there could be some mixing with snow north of Philadelphia but I doubt there will be much on the table to look out for.
Snow Over Baghdad: It snowed today in Baghdad for the first time in about 100 years. Temperatures fell to around freezing as snow fell early on Friday in the Iraqi capital. No accumulations were reported but it was a rare sight for those who weren't used to it. "It is the first time we've seen snow in Baghdad," said 60-year-old Hassan Zahar in a Reuters article. "We've seen sleet before, but never snow. I looked at the faces of all the people, they were astonished," he said. Photo courtesy Reuters
