January 22nd, 2008 Forecast
Another cold one is on tap around here as we see the main axis of cold high pressure move through the area. Temperatures should bottom out in the teens but with light winds wind chills will be less brutal compared to last night. The coldest spots around here should be in the Pine Barrens, which should cool off to 10 (or less) with little or no wind. Clouds will begin to move in late tonight in advance of a cold front that is currently in the Midwest.
Tuesday's weather will be milder, a bit breezy at times, but will feature snow showers that will mix with rain in Philadelphia. North and west will likely see more snow or freezing rain than rain with almost all rain south and east of the city. Snow accumulations with the "storm" will be on the low side as there is not a ton of moisture with this frontal boundary.Temps will end up being in the 30's generally across the region with the coastal areas in South Jersey and Delaware hitting the low 40's.
Temperatures, like on Thursday, will be somewhat close to the freezing mark but these are two different types of systems we have dealt with. Tomorrow's storm will be pushing warm air at us from the southwest and with warm air moving in aloft there could be a changeover to rain or even freezing rain in the north and west burbs for a time. However, the farther north and west one goes the higher your odds for less of that occurring. Here along I-95 I would expect a mix of snow and rain, eventually ending as a period of rain in Philadelphia, with a coating of snow possible in the city. South and east of 295 it looks like a mainly rain event for you but a few flakes of snow may mix in at times.
Start time for the event should be between noon and 3 PM in Philadelphia, an hour earlier west of the city and an hour later east. Precipitation should exit Tuesday evening and we should see the cold pattern reestablish itself on Wednesday afternoon and overnight, continuing through Friday before we moderate this weekend with another chance of rain and/or snow.
Update, 7 AM: Looking at morning model guidance for today and we are seeing a trend on the computers towards less snow, with no accumulating snow expected in the Philadelphia area but a possible one inch snowfall over the Lehigh Valley, Berks, and points north from there.Philadelphia should see any snow or rain beginning in the early and mid afternoon hours and the event should be over shortly after dinner. Precip amounts look to be less than a quarter of an inch regionwide from this system.
