Morning Rain, Afternoon Storms?

As of 5 AM this morning an area of rain and thunderstorms are moving in, with a main shield of rain back to our west over Central PA extending south through Virginia. This rain shield will lift northeast and pass through the western half of the area throughout the morning hours. In South Jersey and Delaware, the potential exists for a dry spell for a time before the cold front moves through during the afternoon. It is possible that a few breaks in the clouds occur during the morning (satellite imagery is showing this over the eastern parts of North Carolina, moving NNE).

If these breaks in the clouds do materialize, there is a possibility of some strong or severe thunderstorms developing in Delaware and interior South Jersey this afternoon with the cold frontal passage. Any additional sunshine will only add instability and additional fuel to this storm's dynamic fire. The main threat in any thunderstorms this afternoon will be wind-based damage as winds could gust over 50 mph in any thunderstorms that do develop. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk for severe weather out for Delaware for today as a result (click for time sensitive image).

I still think most precipitation should end between 11 and 2 over the North and West through between 1 and 4 for the South and East of Philadelphia. Winds will be breezy for a time late this afternoon and early tonight after the cold front passes through the region.
