February 27th, 2008 Forecast

Now Into This Evening: Occasionally rainy and mild conditions will continue across the region as temperatures will continue to have a sharp gradient. Temperatures range from the mid 30's in the Lehigh Valley to 50 in Philadelphia at 2 PM, with some low 50's mixed in across South Jersey (see the map on the left hand side). Winds are southerly across Southeastern Pennsylvania and across South Jersey this afternoon and that will continue into the early evening hours. Rain will continue in an off-and-on fashion for the next few hours, departing the region at or shortly after midnight.Colder air will be on the way tonight with northwest winds picking up late, sending temperatures down into the low to mid 30's across the region by morning.
The next cold wave will bring temperatures below normal for the next few days, with Thursday looking to be the coldest of the next several days as temperatures will struggle to get much above freezing then. Tomorrow's weather will feature some possible morning flurries from Philadelphia on north and west and colder winds from the northwest that will gust to 30 mph. Temperatures will not budge much in a positive direction, only topping out in the low 40's in the city and in the upper 30's to low 40's elsewhere. With the winds, temperatures will feel closer to 30 degrees in the afternoon.
Our next precipitation chance will be on Friday afternoon and evening with a cold front tracking through from low pressure that will track far to our north. With cold air generally in place there could be a chance of rain or snow showers, with the best chances for slushy accumulations of snow being north of Philadelphia. It's still a bit early to start throwing around accumulation totals with this cold front but it does not look like a major storm as the low pressure track itself will be to our north and we will on the "milder" side of the storm track.
Springing Into Spring: John Bolaris broke down his first seasonal forecast last night on Fox 29, calling for a stormy and late-arriving Spring. He believes that we'll see variable conditions but that cold weather may hold a bit longer than some would like. One of the characteristics of Spring in La Nina is highly variable and potentially wild weather. Severe weather outbreaks are a common occurrence in La Nina Springs, with super outbreaks in 1974 and 1985 being two examples of stormy periods that have featured at least one major severe weather outbreak. I will have more thoughts on the upcoming Spring weather (with an unofficial forecast of sorts) later this week.
Guarino To Author Book? Ex Fox 29 meteorologist Rob Guarino has been approached to write a weather murder mystery novel. This makes the second regional meteorologist to have penned a book in recent months, with WABC-TV meteorologist Bill Evans co-writing "Category 7" last year.
