February Chill
It's cold out this morning as I'm sure you can figure out by stepping out the door. Lows this morning were in the teens across much of the region, with low 20's across South Jersey and Delaware, and a low of 5 in Mount Pocono.
What is a bit interesting is that this is the coldest February 28th around these parts since 1994, when the low temperature was 16 degrees in Philadelphia. The record low of 9 seems to be quite safe as there hasn't been a date since 1934 that has approached that cold low temperature. The data set on the left shows all February 28th mornings with a low temperature of 19 or below. You can see the plethora of dates from the 1875-1910 era but only 10 dates since 1920 (not including today), with only three sub 20 degree mornings since 1950. While certainly not record breaking, this morning's cold weather is a bit of a statistical oddity given how few and far between the colder mornings have been over the last 50 years or so.
