Winter Storm Warnings Regionwide

Isolated Two Foot Amounts Possible South Of Philly

Phillyweather.net Forecast: 14-22" in Philly

March 1st and 2nd, 2008 Forecast

Tonight's snow to rain event (for the city, with snow holding longer north and west of Philadelphia and changing quickly to rain south and east) will be the last blast of winter for a few days in the immediate Philadelphia. Warmer air is on the way and a storm system is going to track up the Appalachians early next week, bringing a chance of rain to the region Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Whatever snow and precipitation falls from tonight's cold front should be out of the region by no later than mid morning tomorrow. Temperatures should generally be steady south and east of the city and only drop slightly north and west, with upper 20's to around freezing expected north and west of the city.

The timing for tonight's precipitation is still the same as earlier forecasts, arriving between 5 and 8 PM in the city, after 4 PM north and west, and after 6 PM east of the city.
Saturday: Precipitation should end early in the day and temperatures will jump into the low 40's in Philadelphia with breezy conditions and mostly cloudy skies. With west winds at up to 20 mph temperatures will feel a bit cooler but this will be a temporary shot of "cooler" air behind this cold front as high pressure will build into the Southeastern US over the weekend and bring moderating temperatures and warming winds early next week.

Saturday night's low temperatures should range between 19 and 26, coolest north/west.
Sunday: The moderation trend begins on Sunday with mostly sunny skies, light winds, and temperatures in the low to mid 40's. It'll be a very nice day and definitely the nicer day of the two this weekend. Hopefully you can get out and enjoy the first weekend of meteorological Spring!
Extended: Monday will be warm with temperatures flirting with 60...not sure I want to go there officially yet for Philadelphia, but some places south of Philly should crack 60 degrees before the day is out. The big storm that has been hyped in model guidance for days will track up the Appalachians on Tuesday and will bring rain to the region into early Wednesday before ending. A progressively cooler pattern will set in but temperatures don't look terribly cold as we round out next week. There's a hint at a storm for next weekend.

Warnings May Change: If you are a fan of the infamous "sleet warning" you may be out of luck soon as the National Weather Service may be changing the way warnings are worded. Some of the changes include simplifying snow, freezing rain, and other winter-related advisories as just "winter weather advisories." Sleet and heavy snow warnings will be grouped with "winter storm warnings." The NWS cites the need to simplify clarify communication of warnings and advisories as the reason for the proposed changes.

This Weekend: Meteorological Spring begins and I'll release my thoughts on Spring weather around these parts and nationally. Also, a review of meteorological winter's temperatures and a recap of tonight's cold front.
