Close Call For Warmth

50 miles will make all the difference in the Delaware Valley as a warm front will be attempting to cross through Philadelphia Thursday night and Friday. This warm front is part of a larger storm system that will fire up across the Midwest and, like many storms the past few weeks in the Midwest, move through the Great Lakes and into Canada. This storm system will drag a cold front through our region on Sunday. Until we get there, however, we have the question of the warm front and how far north that will get. Model guidance is still uncertain with just how far north this warm front will get, with the GFS computer model the warmer of the two scenarios, with the warm front clearing Philadelphia and moving past New York City, while the NAM computer model has the warm front lying to our south, keeping us cooler.

Thursday's weather is easier to forecast as we should see mainly cloudy skies and coolish weather as east winds and occasional drizzle and light rain fall. Temperatures should stay in the 58-63 range for much of us as the front will stay south of our whole region. The front will try to move north on Friday but the strength and positioning of a trough and upper level disturbance over Maine and Nova Scotia will determine how far north that warm front pushes through our area. If you want it warm, the upper level feature over Maine needs to be weaker and slightly farther north.

Friday could be a day where one could see clouds and drear for a fair portion of the day but then the warm front may lift through your neighborhood and bring you a few hours of warming with breaks in the overcast and temperatures hitting 70 in the city but much of the northern suburbs are cooler.
