Powerhouse Storm To Impact Us

A classic storm is brewing across the Midwest and will move east, bringing us stormy weather this weekend. You can see the radar up above from Thursday morning showing the expanse of the storm, from Colorado to Chicago. While the weather will not be as drastic nor as nasty as what the Midwest and Great Lakes will face, we will be dealing with showers and storms starting tomorrow and continuing through Saturday.

Low pressure will lift northeast through the Plains and into the Great Lakes states over the next day or two. The storm's strength, which is forecast to be around 980 mb (comparable to a strong nor'easter in our neck of the woods) will pull a warm front north across the East on Friday. While temperatures here might ultimately be warmest today compared to Friday and Saturday as we will see more cloud cover on those days, we should see temperatures above normal on all three days.

The warm front will lift north on Friday and bring us a chance of rain and thunder as moisture streams east along the front. The best chance of rain will be north of Philadelphia as the front should be able to lift past us before the first waves of moisture from the front clear the region. We will, due to being in the warm sector ahead of this storm, be due for scattered showers and storms Friday night and then another chance for storms on Saturday with the cold front moving through. Because the storm system's dynamics will not be as intense as they are over the Midwest and Plains today our chances for severe weather will be quite limited.

While the cold front should move through Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon we will not be seeing an immediate return to sunshine and mild weather. The low pressure system responsible for the upcoming weather will get cut-off from the upper level steering pattern and hang out over New England through early next week. What that means for us is a return to drear and chill with high temperatures in the low 50's, low clouds, and scattered drizzle and afternoon showers that fire up due to instability in the atmosphere. There might be some wet snow mixing in with any scattered shower activity over the higher elevations north and west of the city early next week. Thankfully, this low should begin to lift out on Tuesday and another warm up is in store for the end of NEXT week.
