Waves Of Rain

A soggy Friday and Saturday on tap for Philadelphia as we get jabbed and then uppercut with two punches of soaking rainfall over the next 60-72 hours. While today will feature mostly sunny skies, clouds will increase during the afternoon with rain moving into Philadelphia tonight.

Round #1, in association with a warm frontal boundary from a storm system that is currently in the Ohio Valley, will bring rain tonight into Friday morning before tapering into a period of showers. The morning commute will probably be a bit rough as drivers will have to drive in light to moderate rainfall. The first round should bring us between one-half and one inch of rain in Philadelphia, with a bit more possible north and west of the city.

Between Friday midday and Friday night we should see a period of showery weather, where not everyone will see rain but some places will get a few showers or thunderstorms as the region will be south of the warm front. Temperatures on Friday will be in the 60's in response to south and southeast winds.

Round #2 starts up Friday night with the cold front from this storm. A wave of moisture looks to be developing along the front and will ride northeast as the front moves through, passing through Philadelphia late Friday night and early Saturday morning. Model guidance is suggesting another round of significant rain, with possible thunderstorms at times. While the first half of Saturday looks to be soaked, we should see conditions improve as we move into the afternoon hours as the front slides off of the coast. If this round of rainfall that both the NAM and GFS are suggesting holds true, another one inch of rain could fall.

Computer guidance between tonight and Saturday night is giving the region a lot of rain, with as much as 3.72" on the NAM for Reading by Saturday night. While the rainfall totals may be a bit high on the computers, it would not surprise me to see some isolated 3" rainfall totals over the next three days, with widespread rainfall totals of at least an inch to as much as 2". With this much rainfall, stream rises and localized flooding is certainly possible.
