Weather Rewind, August 17th-23rd, 2008

To say it's been a feast-or-famine cycle of rainfall around here would be an understatement. Despite flooding rains just two weeks prior, the Delaware Valley has been quite dry during the month of August. Philadelphia has had measurable rainfall (0.01" or greater) on just four of 23 days through Saturday, with only two days featuring more than a quarter of an inch. While month-to-date rainfall has just only recently slipped below average in Philadelphia, the trend of dry weather continues from late Spring as only a few areas in the region (mostly in South Jersey) have seen above average precipitation.

Temperature-wise, we continue to pursue the rare below average temperature month. Temperatures last week continued to average out slightly below average and month-to-date we are running just over two degrees below what a "normal" August entails. Not that anyone is complaining about a cool August, mind you -- most of us certainly are not. However, the lack of rainfall is starting to reflect in some yellowing of tree leaves and some early leaf fall in a few locations where stress from a lack of rain is starting to take its toll.
