The End Of WE6-1212

Technology has finally killed it.

Dialing (215) WE6-1212 for your temperature and weather needs will no longer get you that service after Wednesday. For almost seven decades the phone number was used by weather fanatics like Hurricane Schwartz, Elliot Abrams, and even myself from time to time if I needed to get the current temperature on a hot/cold/indifferent day and wasn't able to access the information.

Verizon is killing the service due to decline in its use thanks to internet, television, and wireless technological advances. The formerly hourly updated service only recently updated a few times daily. I called the number at 4 PM today and the last update was back at 7 AM, even though the next update had been promised at 12:15 today. Looks like their starting to fold up shop.

For what it is worth, TI6-1212 is going the way of the Edsel as well.

Of course, there will be a day when using a PC for weather information will go belly up, never to be heard from again. Such are the advances of technology and the evolution of the wireless world.
