Running Down A Record
Sunday will feature a run at record heat in the Delaware Valley and you can thank what is left of Ike for that. As Ike gets pulled northward by a trough in the middle of the country the large circulation of the storm is also pulling heat northward from the Deep South. This heat is also reinforced by the same subtropical high that pushed Ike into the Houston and Galveston area.As a result, hot and very humid weather by September standards will swamp us on Sunday. We should have mostly sunny skies for much of the day with some clouds developing during the afternoon. There should be enough sunshine, however, to boost temperatures into the lower 90's in Philadelphia and close to 90 for much of the area. This is close to record highs. Those are listed below (from the National Weather Service)
PHILADELPHIA....92 SET IN 1995.
ALLENTOWN.......92 SET IN 1915.
ATLANTIC CITY...92 SET IN 1981.
MT. POCONO......83 SET IN 1976.
READING.........92 SET IN 1915 AND 1931.
TRENTON.........91 SET IN 1915.
GEORGETOWN......93 SET IN 1962.
WILMINGTON......92 SET IN 1915.
Records look most in jeopardy in Trenton and Mount Pocono but Philadelphia's 92 degree record high is somewhat attainable. As it is, this looks to quite possibly be the last 90 degree day of the year tomorrow assuming we hit it as the pattern going through next week will bring us cooler weather with high temperatures much closer to where we should be in September.
The temperature graphic up above is from the New Jersey State Climatologist and will update through Sunday with current temperatures.
