September 15th, 2008 Forecast

Now: A hot and humid September Sunday as temperatures are flirting with, or have exceeded, 90 degrees. Winds have been light for the most part today but will pick up as we go through the afternoon and evening as the remnants of Hurricane Ike travel northeast through the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Tonight: It will be warm with variably cloudy skies. The center of Ike will travel far enough to our west and northwest so there will be next-to-no precipitation in the region...although a rogue shower or storm may develop along a frontal boundary that will cross the region late tonight as Ike's circulation pulls this front down from Canada. Winds will increase and it will be breezy by late tonight with southwest and south winds at 10-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph north/west of the city. Low temperatures tonight will generally be in the 70's as the combination of some cloud cover, south winds, and being in the warm sector ahead of the frontal boundary and to the east of Ike will help keep us warm.
Monday: As Ike passes far to our north, traveling up the St. Lawrence Valley, a frontal boundary will cross the region early in the day. Less humid air will push in during the day and temperatures will not rise much in the region as cooler air aloft moves in on the strength of west winds at 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will only climb into the lower and middle 80's in the region and these high temperatures may occur close to midday, with some slight drop off in temperatures possible late in the afternoon. Skies should feature a mix of sun and clouds.

The Week Ahead: Temperatures will stay in the middle to upper 70's throughout the week as a more seasonable airmass moves into the region. The trough that sets up in the wake of the frontal passage tomorrow morning may draw some rainfall north into the Mid Atlantic on Wednesday but showers should stay just south and east of our region, mostly over the Tidewater and Lower Delamarva. The trough axis will push off shore on Thursday and we will stay dry and mostly sunny through the end of the week as a stretch of mundane weather moves on in.
