Subtropical Storm Laura Forms, Threat To No Land

The newest subtropical storm has formed in the Atlantic. Laura has formed in the North Atlantic about halfway between Europe and North America from a large non-tropical low that has acquired some tropical characteristics as it has traveled west over the past couple of days.

Laura is of no real threat to land as it is expected to turn to the north in the next 24 hours, being pulled north by steering conditions due to a ridge of high pressure over the Central Atlantic.

As of now, it is not a tropical system although it could become one before it begins to progress over those colder waters mentioned earlier. There is a chance it could achieve hurricane status if thunderstorm activity can completely wrap around the center of circulation, becoming a tropical cyclone by doing so.
