January 12th, 2009 Forecast

The cold is coming and signs point to the latter half of this week being probably the coldest of the winter season as we see a taste of Siberia in the lower 48 as the polar express opens up shop. Until then, however, we have a "nice" January day ahead of us on Monday to get through.

Into This Evening: Breezy, variably cloudy, with temperatures in the middle 30's in Philadelphia and in the lower to mid 30's north/west of the city. Winds will be from the northwest at 10-20 mph, occasionally gusting to near 30 mph.

Tonight: Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with winds diminishing after sunset to 5 to 10 mph from the northwest. Low temperatures tonight will be in the teens in the outlying areas to the lower 20's in Center City (mid 20's at the Shore).

Monday: Temperatures will rebound under mostly sunny skies into the mid and upper 30's across the region. It won't be a bad day as we'll have a healthy amount of a sunshine but with winds from the north and northwest at 6 to 12 mph, wind chills will be around 30 or so during the afternoon. It is winter, after all.

The Week Ahead: Our two main chances of precipitation this week are on Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday will feature a brief warm up in advance of an arctic cold front that will drive down from Canada and move east towards us. This front will cross late in the day and bring a chance of rain showers south of the city, rain/snow showers in the city itself, and snow showers to the north. There does not look to be anything significant in terms of precipitation with the front itself but computer guidance is trying to develop a coastal low off of Virginia Tuesday evening that will move northeastward. I'll talk more about that later this afternoon. After the arctic front slices through here, we'll take a trip downward in temperatures into the mid 20's for Wednesday before a clipper moves through on Thursday with a chance for light snow. After the clipper clears through, we should see our coldest day temperature-wise on Friday with highs that will be hard-pressed to get much above 20 in Philadelphia and will probably stay in the teens north and west of the city.
