Tropics Still Percolate In November

With the thoughts of snow and potential for a few snow showers or flurries tomorrow night for parts of the area, it's sometimes hard to fathom that the tropics can still fire up in early November. Yes, the Caribbean is one of the few places where tropical cyclones can percolate in the middle portions of Fall. A persistent area of thunderstorm activity in the Southwest Caribbean developed today Tropical Storm Ida, which is sporting 60 mph winds this evening.

Ida's course (west-northwest at 6 mph) will take the storm into Nicaragua later tonight or early tomorrow. Ida is an an environment for strengthening until landfall but once the center of the storm crosses the coastline it should begin to weaken. Ida's slow movement will result in heavy rains over Central America for the next couple of days, with the potential for mudslides and flash flooding across Nicaragua and Honduras.

There is a slight chance (although the National Hurricane Center shows the potential in its forecast) for Ida to restrengthen as it turns back to the north and eventually pulls back out into the Caribbean this weekend. Given Ida's likelihood to be a slow mover over Central America, I think the storm has a stronger chance of dissipating over land than getting back out into the water. However, if Ida does get back into the Caribbean it could move slowly northward towards the Yucatan or potentially into the Gulf of Mexico as a relatively modest tropical cyclone.
