Groundhog Calls For Six More Weeks of Winter

It's a slow news day and a slower weather news day out there so bear with us as we throw a bone...or a the groundhog's prediction of six more weeks of winter.

Punxsutawney Phil saw "lots of shadows" this morning among the thousands of folks who descended on the Western Pennsylvania town in an annual tradition that goes back into the 1800's.

For the record, it was mostly cloudy at 7 AM and in the low 30's at the nearest major observation site to Punxsutawney.   Might have been sneaky shadows given the presence of at least some cloud cover!

Phil's forecast batting average of about 39% according to Stormfax while one AccuWeather writer puts it closer to 80%.   In other words, he's either Tony Gwynn circa 1994 or he's a pretty good NBA free throw shooter if you want to make comparisons to accuracy outside of weather.

Not sure what his sabermetric value is but one meteorologist in Chicago called Phil a punk and in jest offered up recipes for woodchuck stew.

All kidding aside, if the next six weeks of "winter" pan out close to the previous eight, the snow starved might be the most upset by this while those out there who longed for an easy winter in the wake of the last two may be digging their golf clubs out soon.
