May 2012 Recap: Warm, Variably Wet

May 2012 ended up as the 4th warmest May on record in Philadelphia as our temperature average of 68.2 degrees was the warmest in any May since 2004.  Our average temperature was 4.3 degrees above average as well, which helped propel Spring 2012's average temperature to 58.7 degrees, the warmest on record in Philadelphia by seven tenths of a degree.

The old record for warmest Spring was in 2010 at 58.0 degrees and warmest May was 1991, at 70.8 degrees.

The warmest stretch of May compared to average was in the latter half of the month, with four consecutive days of double digit above average warmth and our first 90's of the year in Philadelphia.

In terms of rainfall, the month finished with 3.35" of rain in Philadelphia, 0.36" below normal for the month.  That below average departure was the exception compared to many places northwest of the city as rainfall totals in Reading, Mount Pocono, and Allentown were all above average...and in the case of the latter two, were above average by over an inch.  Wilmington was 1.70" below average and only picked up a bit more than two inches of rain for the month to further show the fickle nature of rainfall distribution last month.
