Christmas Day 2012 Forecast

There are three separate storm systems that will make a run at the Delaware Valley for Christmas week. The first one will be tonight into the pre-dawn hours of Christmas morning, the second one on Boxing Day, and the third one on Saturday.
Precipitation will arrive after sunset tonight. Along I-95 and south/east, it will likely be all rain. In the northwest portions of Philadelphia, a few snowflakes could mix with the rain. The best chance of any accumulating snow will be in the higher elevations north/west of the city, but even there only a coating to an inch is expected, perhaps two inches in the Poconos. So will it be a white Christmas ? I doubt most of us will have much, if any, snow on the ground by Christmas morning, so probably not. Precipitation will change to all rain overnight from south to north.
This storm system will depart by Christmas morning, yielding a very nice day for the holiday. How about mid 40s with a mix of sun and clouds?!
Unfortunately, if you have plans for the day after Christmas, Boxing Day, the next storm system will be arriving. Wednesday will start off cloudy, but rain and snow will arrive at some point during the afternoon. Along the I-95 corridor and areas to the south and east, expect mainly rain. North and west of I-95, look for a freezing rain, sleet, and snow mix -- this could cause a sloppy afternoon commute if you have to drive north/west of the city. Temperatures will rise overnight Wednesday night, so everyone will eventually change to all rain.
Leftover rain showers are possible on Thursday along with increasing wind. The wind will still be around for Friday as well, along with chilly temperatures.
The third storm system will get here on Saturday. As of now, this one looks like it could provide us with our BEST chance of accumulating snow out of the three systems this week. It's too early to provide specifics, so for now we'll just call it rain and snow showers to start the weekend. The second half of the weekend will remain chilly and windy with a leftover rain or snow shower.
Merry Christmas !
