Grass and Brush Fire Potential Today

The region is under an enhanced risk for grass and brush fires today, with Red Flag Warnings issued for the Delaware Valley between 9 AM and 10 PM.  These warnings are out due to the combination of dry brush, low humidity, and gusty winds that will result in the potential of fires breaking out, such as the one that broke out in Maryland yesterday afternoon that resulted in the smoke plume traveling across Delaware and even perhaps into the lower portions of Cape May.

Dew point readings (as seen in green on the graphic below) are running quite dry early this morning -- mainly between 10 and 15 degrees.  Modeling indicates these will remain quite low through the day, with humidity values dropping as temperatures climb to near 50 degrees this afternoon (generally mid and upper 40's northwest, around 50 or just above that city and southeast).  Between these low dew points and wind gusts that could reach 30 or 35 mph, the potential for a quick spreading brush or grass fire exists today.
