Weather Rewind -- July 14-20, 2013

Temperatures last week were 8.6 degrees above average -- a 7 day heat wave with the average low of 77.6 degrees will definitely do its part to help boost your average temperature.  We had three record warm lows set or tied last week in the course of our heat wave.  The hottest temperature, 98, occurred on Thursday as humidity levels nudged high enough to bring heat index values to over 105 in parts of the region.

While it was quite hot last week, we were hotter just last year during the same time frame as temperatures topped 100 on the 18th during 2012, with heat index values around 107 on that day last year....pretty similar to Thursday.

The heat was knocked back a notch or two on Saturday night as thunderstorms fired up rapidly around sunset as the cap in the atmosphere broke and storms popped just west of the city and produced a 66 mph wind gust at the Airport.

Nationally, the core of warmth compared to average has been over the northern half of the country, while temperatures were as cool as eight degrees below normal in Texas as an upper level low (the same one that brought us rains at the end of last week) retrograded across the country and ended up parked over Texas and New Mexico for a couple of days. Dallas' high on Monday (74) was cooler than Philadelphia's low (76)!
